Portrait Photography: Reading Light and People

Portrait photography is honest work. You can't fake a real expression — the subject either trusts you or they don't. Everything in this course is built around that fact: how to earn that trust quickly, and what to do with it technically once you have it.

What you are actually signing up for

There is a moment in portrait photography when the subject forgets the camera is there. Getting to that moment consistently is a skill, not luck. This course starts from that premise and works backward through everything that makes it possible — light quality, lens choice, timing, and how you talk to the person sitting across from you.

Oleksiy Brandt spent six years shooting editorial portraits for print magazines before he started teaching. His approach is direct: most early portrait problems are not technical, they are relational. A nervous photographer produces a stiff subject. The camera settings matter, but so does knowing when to stop adjusting and just shoot.

Sessions cover window light and how to read it before touching any artificial source, focal length decisions from 50mm to 85mm and why the difference is visible in the final image, and basic posing logic that does not feel like posing. There are also two full critique sessions where student work gets examined frame by frame.

Oleksiy Brandt — I learned more from looking at contact sheets than from any manual. We do the same thing here.

Each module includes shooting assignments with specific constraints — one light source, one location, one hour. Constraints produce decisions, and decisions are where learning actually happens.
