Studio Lighting for Portrait Photographers
Portrait photography is honest work. You can't fake a real expression — the subject either trusts you or they don't. Everything in this course is built around that fact: how to earn that trust quickly, and what to do with it technically once you have it.
about this course
What you are actually signing up for
Studio lighting looks complicated from the outside because there are a lot of variables and most tutorials skip the reasoning behind them. This course is structured around understanding why a light goes where it goes, not memorizing named setups and hoping they work.
Daryna Koval built a commercial portrait studio in Kyiv and has shot product and people work for clients across retail, publishing, and corporate sectors. She teaches lighting as a problem-solving process — you have a subject, a mood, a background, and a deadline. Knowing your equipment deeply makes that process faster and more repeatable.
The course covers monolight and strobe systems, light modifiers from umbrellas to strip boxes, background separation, and skin tone rendering across different light temperatures. There is a full session on metering and another on tethered shooting with live histogram review. Each student gets a technical brief for their final assignment that mirrors a real commercial brief format.
Some sessions are recorded in an actual studio rental space with real subjects so the environmental decisions are visible, not hypothetical. Equipment lists include both high-end and affordable alternatives for each setup.
